Islamabad (Web Desk): President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have conveyed their felicitations to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader Tarique Rahman after the party achieved a commanding majority in Bangladesh’s general elections, positioning it to form the next government.

In a statement issued on Friday, President Zardari applauded the BNP’s emphatic win and commended the citizens of Bangladesh for successfully carrying out the electoral process across 299 constituencies. He highlighted that more than 127 million registered voters participated in the polls, describing the exercise as a significant democratic milestone.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent support for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democratic journey, the president expressed Islamabad’s readiness to work closely with the incoming administration. He underscored Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation in trade, defence collaboration, cultural interaction and engagement in regional forums.

President Zardari further observed that the election outcome offers South Asia a chance to turn the page on earlier periods when regional cooperation — including within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), established in Dhaka in 1985 — remained stalled.

He noted that the forum had long struggled to function effectively due to India’s approach and voiced hope that the evolving political atmosphere in Dhaka would pave the way for more balanced, independent and respectful relations across the region.

He also extended his best wishes for Bangladesh’s enduring stability, growth and prosperity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party emerged with a sweeping majority in Bangladesh’s parliamentary polls.

Taking to X, the prime minister shared his message, writing, “I extend my warmest felicitations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a resounding victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.”

He also conveyed his good wishes to the citizens of Bangladesh for ensuring the smooth and successful conduct of the electoral process.

“I look forward to working closely with the new Bangladesh leadership to further strengthen our historic, brotherly multifaceted bilateral relations and advance our shared goals of peace, stability, and development in South Asia and beyond,” the prime minister added.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also conveyed his congratulations to the head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party after the party’s electoral success.

He expressing optimism about the country’s future under the new leadership.

“I am confident that, under your able stewardship, Bangladesh will continue its journey towards peace, progress, and prosperity,” he said in a post on X, congratulating the people of Bangladesh on a successful democratic transition.
