Lahore (Web Desk): The 33rd death anniversary of legendary revolutionary and people’s poet, Habib Jalib is being observed today
Born on March 24, 1928, in the city of Hoshiarpur in eastern Punjab, Jalib began writing poetry at the young age of 15.
After the creation of Pakistan, he initially moved to Karachi and later settled in Lahore, where he witnessed social injustices that would become central themes in his work. Throughout his life, Jalib remained a vocal advocate of resistance and protest, enduring imprisonment and political oppression without ever bowing to the rulers of his time.
In addition to revolutionary poetry, Habib Jalib also penned film songs, showcasing his versatility in both romantic and protest genres. Renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz hailed him as a true poet of the people.
His notable works include Barg-e-Awara, Sar-e-Maqtal, Ahd-e-Sitam, Zikar-e-Bahte Khoon, Goshe Mein Qafas Ke, Harf-e-Haq, Is Sheher-e-Kharabi Mein, and Harf-e-Sardar.
Jalib lived a life marked by simplicity and austerity, passing away on March 12, 1993, at the age of 65.
In recognition of his contributions, the Government of Pakistan posthumously awarded him the Nishan-e-Imtiaz sixteen years after his death.
