Peshawar (Web Desk): JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Urges Internal Political Reform Within PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F), has called for political changes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), suggesting that it would be best if such reforms come from within the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which holds the majority in the provincial assembly.
Speaking at a press briefing in Peshawar, Fazlur Rehman emphasized that whether the changes come from inside PTI or through outside influence is less important than the fact that change is necessary.
“If PTI claims it has the majority, then the transformation must occur from within,” he said. “It should not seem as if the opposition is orchestrating the government’s removal.”
He described PTI’s control of the province as “artificial” and lacking real public support, urging internal restructuring for political stability.
Regarding the upcoming Senate elections, Fazlur Rehman said talks with other political parties were ongoing but declined to provide further details.
He also distanced himself from the federal government, criticizing alleged corruption and vote-buying during elections, stating he would not support a government formed through such means. However, he affirmed that in the event of any external threat or war, he would stand united with the government in the national interest.
Expressing deep concern over the worsening law and order situation in K-P, he warned that the province could no longer tolerate political or security instability. He proposed convening an all-party conference to address these issues and expressed willingness for dialogue with opposition groups.
Reflecting on his own time in office, he said that peace prevailed during his government, with fewer police checkpoints and freer movement of people.
Fazlur Rehman also reiterated his opposition to the merger of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with K-P, calling the decision hasty and poorly discussed. He argued that reversing the merger would serve the national interest and questioned the delay in extending judicial and administrative frameworks to the region.
He announced that a grand tribal jirga was scheduled to meet soon and expressed respect for the tribal elders participating.
Criticizing the current provincial administration, he accused it of wasting public funds on unnecessary appointments and luxuries, labeling it as a government born out of rigging and coercion.
On the issue of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s imprisonment, Fazlur Rehman said that ideally, no politician should be jailed, though it happens. He emphasized that political movements should focus on the welfare of the people rather than personal gains, and expressed no objection if Imran Khan’s children visit Pakistan.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed that his party would never seek power through undemocratic tactics and that true leadership comes from the support of the public, not through force or manipulation.
