Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker have agreed to broaden cooperation between Punjab and the United States (US) in several areas including security, education, investment, energy and technology during a meeting in Lahore.
The discussions included potential collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital assets and the energy sector.
The two sides also explored the possibility of benefiting from US expertise to strengthen Punjab’s capacity to deal with flooding and the growing problem of smog.
Both sides further considered organising a Punjab-US Business and Investment Forum in Lahore, aimed at attracting investment and deepening commercial relations.
The proposed forum could provide fresh avenues for businesses and investors from Pakistan and the US to expand their engagement.
During the meeting, the US envoy commended Punjab CM’s efforts to promote women’s empowerment and also appreciated the arrangements made for the Basant festival in Lahore.
She described the people of Punjab, particularly Lahore, as welcoming, energetic and full of life.
Maryam said the provincial government planned to broaden Basant-related activities next year, while legal reforms would be introduced to further protect and advance women’s rights.
The US envoy also spoke about government measures aimed at tackling development needs and climate-related difficulties confronting different parts of Punjab.
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz noted that nearly one million Pakistanis from Punjab are residing in the US, calling the overseas community a valuable national asset.
She also outlined initiatives involving electric public transport, interest-free loans for businesses and measures designed to improve women’s safety and protection.
Maryam said preparations made ahead of the monsoon season, along with improved water management mechanisms at the district level, had helped enhance the drainage of rainwater throughout the province.
The Punjab CM added that ongoing reforms were reshaping both urban and rural areas while creating greater opportunities for women to travel independently and participate more actively in economic activities.
