Lahore (Web Desk): Former Pakistan hockey captain and Olympic gold medallist Khalid Mahmood has died at the age of 75 after battling a prolonged illness.
Mahmood remained closely associated with Pakistan hockey even after his playing career, serving as secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and later taking on the responsibility of managing the national hockey team.
Born in Jhelum, Punjab, on December 28, 1941, Mahmood represented Pakistan as a right-out and became part of several successful national squads during his international career.
He was included in the Pakistan team that earned a silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
His international achievements continued at the 1966 Asian Games, where Pakistan finished second and secured another silver medal.
Mahmood later reached the pinnacle of Olympic success when he featured in Pakistan’s gold medal-winning team at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
He was also a member of the national side that claimed gold at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, further adding to his distinguished record in international hockey.
Following news of his death, former Pakistani Olympians expressed their sorrow and remembered Mahmood for his significant contribution to the country’s hockey.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over conveyed his grief over the death of former national hokey team captain and Olympic gold medallist.
The prime minister praised Mahmood’s valuable and longstanding services to Pakistan hockey, acknowledging his contribution to the national sport.
PM Shehbaz extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
