Li Qiang becomes China's new premier

Beijing (Web Desk): Li Qiang was elected as new premier of China on Saturday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping signed a presidential order to appoint Li Qiang as premier at the ongoing session of China’s national legislature.

Li was nominated unanimously in the session of the National People’s Congress in Beijing, today.

The 63-year-old Li Qiang, who is a close confidant of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, replaced Li Keqiang as the new prime minister of China.

On Friday, China's leader Xi Jinping was elected as President for the third time by the country's parliament.

Nearly 3,000 members of China's parliament, the National People's Congress, voted unanimously in the Great Hall of the People for Xi to be president.

President Xi will make a speech on Monday before the annual parliamentary session closes.

Meanwhile, the parliament also elected Zhao Leji, 66, as the new parliament chair and Han Zheng, 68, as the new vice president. Both men belong to Xi’s previous team of party leaders at the Politburo Standing Committee.
