Washington (Web Desk/Agencies): Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Tuesday after President Donald Trump announced that US forces had launched strikes against Iranian targets following the downing of an American Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
In remarks to ABC News, Trump said Iran was responsible for bringing down the aircraft and confirmed that a military response was already underway. He said the action taken by Washington was intended to be forceful and significant, reflecting the seriousness of the incident.
Iranian media outlets reported that Qeshm Island, situated in the Strait of Hormuz, was among the locations targeted. Authorities also confirmed that a projectile struck the city of Sirik, while Iran’s Fars News Agency said residents in eastern Hormozgan province heard multiple explosions.
Earlier in the day, Trump stated that the two US service members aboard the helicopter had survived without injuries. A US official, who spoke anonymously, said the helicopter was brought down by an Iranian one-way attack drone.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi refrained from directly commenting on the helicopter’s loss but warned that the continued presence of foreign military forces in the region increased the possibility of incidents and unintended clashes.
Writing on social media, he argued that the most effective way to avoid such risks would be for those forces to withdraw from the area.

Later, Iranian state television quoted a military official as saying that Iran had not carried out any offensive aerial operations in the Strait of Hormuz during the previous 24 hours. The official also warned that any further hostile actions by opposing forces would trigger a firm response from Tehran.
Despite the military retaliation, Trump appeared to minimize the significance of the event during a telephone interview with The Wall Street Journal. He said the incident was not a major concern and stressed that the pilot involved was safe.
Even so, the confrontation is likely to complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a broader settlement between Washington and Tehran, ending regional hostilities, and restoring normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway for global energy shipments and commercial trade.
Trump has repeatedly expressed confidence that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement. However, there has been little visible progress since a fragile ceasefire between the two sides took effect in early April.
According to the US military, the helicopter crashed into waters near the coast of Oman while conducting a patrol mission at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday. A US Navy surface drone located the crew and assisted in their recovery.
The US Central Command did not disclose what caused the aircraft to go down. It stated that both soldiers were rescued roughly two hours after the incident and were reported to be in stable condition, offering a more cautious assessment than Trump’s earlier comments that the crew was completely unharmed.
