Karachi (Web Desk): Filmmaker Jamshed Mehmood Raza, popularly known as Jami, was granted bail by the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday in a defamation case filed by fellow director Sohail Javed.
The court accepted Jami’s bail application upon submission of surety bonds worth Rs50,000 and directed the authorities to ensure his release.
This development follows a recent verdict by a sessions court in Karachi, which sentenced Jami to two years in prison on defamation charges. The same court, led by Additional Sessions Judge (South) Syed Waqar Hyder, also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
Jami had moved the SHC on Wednesday to appeal the decision, maintaining that the case involved a bailable offence and alleging that the trial court failed to observe essential legal formalities during the proceedings.
In his petition, Jami described the accusations against him as unfounded and without merit.
He requested the SHC to overturn the lower court’s judgment and nullify the conviction, arguing that the legal process was flawed and the charges unjustified.
