Jakarta (Web Desk): Indonesia has announced a temporary ban on Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, citing concerns over the growing threat of artificial intelligence being used to create and spread explicit content.
This move comes as authorities in other countries have also expressed concerns, but Indonesia becomes the first nation to take action on this matter.
The Indonesian government stated that the ban was implemented in the interest of protecting citizens' digital safety and human rights, particularly in light of the increased risk posed by AI-generated deepfake pornography.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs has also demanded a response from XAI, the company behind Grok, regarding the platform’s safety protocols.
On Thursday, XAI had announced that the image generation and editing features would now be restricted to paid users due to security issues that had allowed explicit and child pornography material to surface on the platform.
Elon Musk responded on X, clarifying that anyone using Grok to produce illegal content would face consequences similar to those for uploading unlawful material.
In Indonesia, the government enforces strict laws against online pornography, and following the announcement of the ban, Grok disabled its image-generation feature for most users on Friday. The action follows backlash from various sectors of the global community.
The United Kingdom has also hinted at possible fines and regulatory action against X over similar concerns, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced strong concerns about the use of Grok for generating explicit material.
The Australian eSafety Commission has warned that any illegal content identified on the platform would be met with full legal action.
This ban underscores the escalating global concerns regarding the potential misuse of generative AI for creating explicit content, highlighting the pressing need for more robust regulations and safeguards in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
