Lahore (Web Desk): Matthew Breetzke lit up the Gaddafi Stadium with a sensational 150 on his one-day international (ODI) debut, propelling South Africa to a commanding 304 for 6 in their clash against New Zealand in the Tri-Nations Series.
Breetzke’s knock, the highest-ever score on debut in ODI history, had everyone talking as he played with poise and determination, despite the challenging conditions.
"It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, and I’m feeling a bit worn out," Breetzke shared after the innings, yet remained focused on the task ahead.
"My goal was always to bat as long as I could, give myself a chance, and hopefully put us in a good position. Now, it’s all about setting up our bowling attack to get us over the line, he added.
The South African opener took full advantage of the tough pitch, especially against New Zealand's disciplined bowling attack, where O'Rourke proved particularly difficult to handle.
Breetzke’s mindset throughout was clear: preserve his wicket and build a partnership.
The Proteas’ approach with the bat was methodical, and with the ball in hand, they believed they could exert pressure in the early overs and tighten the middle phase.
After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to bowl, likely banking on the conditions providing some early assistance.
The hosts' effort came despite a dramatic change in their lineup, as Devon Conway replaced the injured Rachin Ravindra, who had suffered a facial injury in New Zealand’s previous match against Pakistan.
For South Africa, this match marked the debut of four fresh faces, with Breetzke joined by Mihlali Mpongwana, Senuran Muthusamy, and Eathan Bosch in the starting XI.
The young squad was keen to make a statement, and their high total was certainly a sign of confidence.
The question now was whether the new ball bowlers could strike early and capitalize on their strong batting display.
With New Zealand looking to bounce back after their win against Pakistan, the pressure was on both sides as they prepared to take to the field in the second half of the match.
