Rawalpindi (Web Desk): Former Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hamid, has been formally charged with multiple offences, including ‘engaging in political activities’ and violating the Official Secrets Act.
According to a press release issued by the ISPR, the process of FGCM was initiated against Gen Hameed under provisions of the Pakistan Army Act on August 12.
“On 12 August 2024, process of FGCM was initiated against Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd) under provisions of Pakistan Army Act and in first place Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) has been formally arraigned on charges of engaging in political activities, violations of Official Secret Act detrimental to safety and interest of the state, misuse of authority & government resources and causing wrongful loss to a person(s),” the ISPR said.
In addition to the charges, a separate investigation is underway to examine his alleged involvement in incidents that contributed to political unrest in the country, particularly events surrounding the disturbances of May 9, 2023, the ISPR statement read.
“During the process, involvement of Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd), in events related to creating agitation and unrest, leading upto multiple incidents including but not limited to 9th May 2023 incident for fomenting instability; at the behest of and in collusion with vested political interests, is also being separately investigated.
“Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd) is being afforded with all legal rights as per the law,” it added.
In August 2024, the former ISI chief taken was into custody by the military on accusations of abusing his authority and breaching the Army Act.
This action followed a detailed investigation conducted by the Pakistan Army, which was ordered by the Supreme Court in response to complaints against him related to the Top City case.
The inquiry revealed multiple instances where Hamid, after retiring from the military, had violated military regulations.
These violations were particularly linked to his tenure as the commander of the Peshawar Corps.
The case against him originated from a petition submitted to the Supreme Court by the CEO of the Top City housing society, which accused Hamid of involvement in land grabbing and stealing valuables during a raid on the society.
Based on the results of the inquiry, the military initiated court-martial proceedings against the former ISI chief.
In addition to his arrest, three other retired military officers were also taken into custody in connection with the same housing scheme case, suggesting that the investigation was expanding to cover more individuals implicated in the alleged misconduct.
