Lahore (Web Desk): Pakistan is observing “National Constitution Day” on April 10 with traditional enthusiasm and patriotic spirit. The day commemorates the historic occasion when all major political parties unanimously finalized Pakistan’s third permanent Constitution in 1973.
After the events of 1971, efforts were made to unite a divided Pakistan through a consensus-based constitutional framework. Under the leadership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and other political leaders of the time, the need for a unified constitution was strongly felt.
A special constitutional committee was formed based on the 1970 elections, which worked for around eight months before presenting its final draft. On April 10, 1973, the National Assembly approved the Constitution with a strong majority of 135 votes. It was later officially enforced on August 14, 1973.
The 1973 Constitution requires a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and a strong majority in the Senate for any amendments, highlighting its strength and significance as the supreme legal document of the country.
The Constitution continues to serve as the foundation of Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy, ensuring unity, legal continuity, and protection of citizens’ rights.
