Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced plans to block WhatsApp accounts associated with SIM cards that are inactive, cancelled or no longer in use.
According to the telecom regulator, the decision has been taken over concerns that some WhatsApp accounts connected to inactive mobile numbers are being exploited for fraudulent activities and other unlawful purposes.
The PTA has warned that the process of blocking such WhatsApp accounts could begin at any time.
Users have therefore been advised to ensure that their WhatsApp accounts remain connected to valid and active mobile numbers.
Before announcing the move, the authority conducted an awareness campaign for several weeks, urging users to verify and activate the SIM cards linked to their WhatsApp accounts.
During the campaign, callers also heard recorded messages in place of the usual calling tone, warning that WhatsApp accounts associated with unregistered or inactive SIMs could eventually be shut down.
The telecom regulator has specifically advised people who have changed their mobile numbers to use WhatsApp’s “Change Number” feature without delay. This will help them retain control of their accounts and ensure that their WhatsApp profiles remain connected to their current numbers.
The PTA has also asked mobile users to check the status of their SIM cards and take the necessary steps if they find any number to be inactive or no longer operational.
The authority said the measure is aimed at reducing the misuse of inactive mobile numbers, preventing fraud and strengthening digital security for users.
The decision could also affect Pakistanis living abroad who continue to operate WhatsApp accounts registered on Pakistani SIM cards without transferring those accounts to the SIMs they currently use in their country of residence.
