Kabul (Web Desk): The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has intensified its campaign to restrict women’s participation in social, political, and public life, with authorities reportedly launching a new wave of arrests under the enforcement of a strict dress code.
According to sources, Taliban religious police have detained dozens of women and young girls in Kabul, Herat, and several other cities after setting up checkpoints in public areas, markets, and near educational institutions.
Those taken into custody were accused of failing to comply with clothing regulations imposed by the Taliban authorities.
Human rights activists argue that the dress code is being used as a pretext to further intimidate women and limit their presence in public spaces.
They contend that the broader objective is to confine women to their homes and marginalize them from Afghan society.
The latest measures have drawn strong criticism from the international community. The United Nations and several global human rights organizations have condemned the arrests, describing them as a serious violation of fundamental human rights.
In an emergency statement, the United Nations called on the Taliban authorities to immediately halt the crackdown on women and release those detained.
International observers have warned that continued restrictions on women’s rights could further deepen Afghanistan’s isolation from the global community.
