Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the procurement of one million metric tons of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) as part of the provincial government's efforts to maintain stable wheat and flour prices for consumers.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister through a video link from Lahore.
The meeting focused on assessing the province’s wheat reserves and evaluating strategies to keep flour prices from rising in local markets.
Officials provided a detailed briefing on existing wheat stocks, the cost of flour production, and recent market movements affecting commodity prices.
Discussions also covered measures to ensure a consistent supply of wheat and prevent unnecessary pressure on flour prices.
During the meeting, it was agreed that flour mills would receive wheat at a fixed rate of Rs3,300 per maund.
The move is expected to help mill owners manage production expenses while ensuring that flour and bread remain affordable and readily available to the public.
CM Maryam Nawaz underscored the importance of taking prompt and practical measures to shield consumers from the impact of inflation.
She directed the relevant authorities to guarantee transparency in the distribution process and enforce strict oversight of wheat supplies.
The Punjab CM also instructed the relevant departments to work in close coordination with PASSCO and representatives of flour mills to ensure there are no disruptions in the movement and availability of wheat across the province.
Furthermore, officials were ordered to keep a close watch on market conditions and take swift action against hoarding, artificial shortages, or any attempts to manipulate prices.
According to the provincial government, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at maintaining price stability for essential food items and providing relief to people throughout Punjab.
