Islamabad (Web Desk): The nation is commemorating the 59th death anniversary of Madar-e-Millat (mother of the nation) Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah today (Thursday), honouring her lifelong dedication to the Pakistan Movement and her invaluable contributions to the country's foundation.
Fatima Jinnah was born in Karachi on July 31, 1893.
She remained one of the closest companions of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and played an indispensable role in the struggle for an independent homeland for Muslims.
After the death of Quaid-e-Azam's wife in 1929, she stood firmly by her brother, offering unwavering support while helping unite women across the subcontinent to actively participate in the movement for Pakistan.
Following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, she established the Women's Relief Committee, which later evolved into the All Pakistan Women's Association (APWA). She also devoted herself to the rehabilitation and settlement of Muhajirs who migrated to the newly established country.
Widely honoured with the title of Madar-e-Millat, or Mother of the Nation, for her extraordinary services during the independence movement, Fatima Jinnah returned to the political arena in 1964. At the age of 71, she challenged military ruler Ayub Khan in the presidential election, reinforcing her commitment to democratic values.
Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah passed away on July 9, 1967. Decades after her death, she continues to be admired for her steadfast advocacy of civil liberties and her enduring role in the Pakistan Movement.
Paying tribute on her death anniversary, President Asif Ali Zardari said Fatima Jinnah's unwavering commitment to the creation of Pakistan, her loyal support for Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and her tireless services during the independence struggle have secured her an everlasting place in the nation's history.
He described her as a symbol of strength during some of the most decisive moments in Pakistan's journey, saying she broke through the social limitations of her time by inspiring women across the subcontinent to become an influential force in the movement for freedom.
The president also highlighted her leading role in assisting millions of refugees after independence, saying her compassion, practical leadership and determination gave hope and dignity to families striving to rebuild their lives under extremely difficult circumstances.
President Zardari further noted that Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah’s unwavering belief in constitutional governance, the rule of law and democratic principles, along with her courageous opposition to authoritarianism, continues to inspire Pakistanis.
“Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah’s legacy serves as a lasting reminder that a nation's true strength is rooted in justice, equality, freedom and the moral courage of its people,” President Zardari said.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid homage to Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, describing her services to the Pakistan Movement and the nation as a glorious chapter in Pakistan's history.
In his message, the prime minister said she remained by the side of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah throughout the struggle for independence, displaying exceptional courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to the national cause.
He said Fatima Jinnah continues to inspire young people, especially women, through her exemplary leadership, proving that women have a vital role to play in achieving national goals and contributing to the country's progress.
PM Shehbaz added that, alongside other distinguished women leaders, Fatima Jinnah led with remarkable courage during the Pakistan Movement and represented the women of the subcontinent with honour.
After independence, he said, she remained actively engaged in Pakistan's social and political advancement, while promoting national unity and positive values.
PM Shehbaz prayed for the elevation of her ranks and said the nation would forever remember her invaluable services and enduring legacy.
