Lahore (Web Desk): Today marks the 23rd death anniversary of the illustrious Jon Elia, one of the most celebrated poets, writers, and intellectuals of Urdu literature.
Jon Elia was known for his mastery in both prose and poetry, and his unconventional style earned him a reputation as a rebel poet who challenged traditional norms. His works continue to be admired for their emotional depth and intellectual boldness.
Born on December 14, 1931, in Amroha, India, Jon Elia was a polyglot with fluency in English, Arabic, and Persian. Some of his most famous works include "Shayad", "Goya", "Yani", and "Lekin".
His first poetry collection, "Shayad", was published in 1991 and is considered a monumental contribution to Urdu literature, often regarded as the "prologue" of modern Urdu poetry. Over the course of his life, he penned nearly 50,000 verses and translated over 60 rare books.
Jon Elia passed away on November 8, 2002, but his legacy continues to inspire countless poetry lovers. Today, his admirers gather at the Sakhi Hassan Graveyard to pay tribute to the poet, honoring his memory and reflecting on his lasting impact on Urdu literature.
