Canberra /Islamabad (Web Desk): Australia has formally imposed a ban on the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), declaring the militant organization a terrorist entity in response to a recent surge in violent incidents in Pakistan.
Under the new designation, any form of financial assistance, facilitation, or support for the group will be treated as a serious criminal offence, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison along with substantial fines.
According to Australian media reports, the decision comes in the wake of escalating militant activity in Pakistan, particularly following the launch of what has been described as “Operation Heroof 2.0” in January 2026.
During this period, the group allegedly carried out a series of suicide attacks, targeted killings of non-Baloch civilians, and assaults on critical infrastructure across several districts, which prompted heightened international concern.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated in an official remark that Australia maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of extremism and remains committed to combating terrorist networks in all their manifestations.
She added that under the newly enforced measures, not only will funding the organization be illegal, but any use of its assets or attempts to support its operations will also be strictly prohibited.
Authorities will further intensify monitoring of its financial channels and recruitment networks to curb any attempts at expansion or coordination.
With this move, Australia joins a growing list of countries that have designated the BLA as a terrorist organization. Pakistan, the United States, and the United Kingdom are among the states that had already placed sanctions and restrictions on the group due to concerns over its involvement in violent activities and regional instability.
Political analysts view Australia’s decision as an endorsement of Pakistan’s longstanding position that international cooperation is essential to effectively counter terrorism in the region. They believe the ban will significantly restrict the group’s overseas financial and operational reach, further isolating its network on the global stage.
