Atlanta (Web Desk): Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, securing a place in the quarter-finals after overturning a two-goal deficit in a dramatic finish.

The result brought an end to Egypt's inspiring campaign, with the African side bowing out after reaching the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time.

Playing in Atlanta, United States, Egypt, led by Mohamed Salah, adopted an aggressive approach from the opening whistle and consistently put Argentina's defence under pressure.

Their positive start was rewarded in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim found the back of the net to hand Egypt a 1-0 lead.

Argentina had an ideal opportunity to restore parity six minutes later after being awarded a penalty.  However, Lionel Messi's powerful effort was brilliantly denied by the Egyptian goalkeeper, allowing Egypt to preserve its advantage heading into the remainder of the contest.

Egypt continued to impress after the interval and doubled its lead in the 67th minute when Mostafa Zico finished confidently to make it 2-0. At that stage, the underdogs appeared to be on course for one of the tournament's biggest upsets.

The defending champions, however, mounted a remarkable fightback in the closing stages.

Romero sparked Argentina's revival with a goal in the 79th minute before Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss by scoring the equaliser four minutes later to level the match at 2-2.

Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround with the decisive goal, sealing a memorable 3-2 victory for Argentina.

The reigning champions have now advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the match between Switzerland and Colombia.
