Ottawa (Web Desk): In a sharp response to US President-elect Donald Trump's recent remarks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed any possibility of Canada merging with the United States (US), declaring that there was "not a snowball's chance in hell" this would happen.

Trudeau pointed out the strong bilateral ties between the two nations, emphasizing their deep cooperation in security and trade.

Earlier Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly also weighed in, criticizing Trump's comments as reflecting a fundamental misunderstanding of Canada.

She assured that Canada's economy and people were resilient and that the country would never be intimidated by threats.

Trump's comments, made during a chaotic press conference, came shortly after Congress certified his victory.

Among other controversial statements, Trump discussed using "economic force" to push Canada toward joining the US, a proposal that many see as highly unlikely.

The US president -elect reiterated his plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods once in office, a move that could severely damage Canada's economy, given its dependence on exports to the US.

Trump also made headlines by suggesting military action to take control of strategic locations like the Panama Canal and Greenland.

His remarks set off alarm bells in Canada, with officials preparing for potential retaliation in what could escalate into a trade conflict.
