Beijing (Web Desk): Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 US presidential election, stressing the need for both countries to foster a relationship based on cooperation and mutual respect.
President Xi's message highlighted the importance of maintaining stable, sound, and sustainable relations between China and the US, which would benefit not only the two nations but also the global community.
In his statement, Xi noted that history has shown that both China and the US thrive when they cooperate and suffer when they confront one another.
A stable and constructive bilateral relationship, he emphasized, is in the shared interest of both nations and aligns with the expectations of the international community.
The Chinese president urged both countries to work together under the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
He emphasized the need to manage differences effectively and expand areas of mutually beneficial cooperation. Xi expressed hope that the two nations would find the "right way" to engage in the new era, ensuring a relationship that brings benefits to both parties and contributes to global stability.
On the same day, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also congratulated J.D. Vance on his election as vice president of the United States.
During a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning echoed Xi’s sentiments, stating that both China and the US stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation.
Mao reiterated that a healthy and sustainable China-US relationship serves the common interests of both nations and is vital for the peace and stability of the international community.
When asked about Trump’s previous remarks concerning blanket tariffs on Chinese goods, Mao declined to respond to hypothetical scenarios. However, she emphasized that trade wars benefit no one, stating, “There is no winner in a trade war, nor will the world benefit from it.”
On the matter of Taiwan, Mao reiterated China’s position, describing the Taiwan issue as the most sensitive and critical matter in China-US relations.
She reiterated that China firmly opposes any form of official interactions between the US and Taiwan, urging the US government to adhere to the "One China" policy and the three Sino-US joint communiqués. Mao called for Washington to handle Taiwan-related issues with care to avoid serious damage to bilateral relations and peace across the Taiwan Strait.
In response to questions about Elon Musk’s potential role in the Trump administration and its impact on China-US ties, Mao reaffirmed that China’s stance on US-China relations remains consistent, regardless of individual figures within the US government.
Separately, a spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce expressed Beijing's willingness to strengthen communication and cooperation with Washington.
The spokesperson emphasized that China seeks to resolve differences with the US based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and aims to guide China-US economic and trade relations toward a more stable, healthy, and sustainable path, benefiting both nations and the world at large.
