UN chief strongly condemns deadly suicide bombing at Islamabad mosque

Islamabad (Web Desk): The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his strongest condemnation of the deadly attack on worshippers at a mosque in Islamabad on Friday, calling it a shocking violation of human rights and an unacceptable act of violence against innocent civilians.

Through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Guterres voiced profound sorrow over the loss of life, noting that the assault claimed multiple lives and left several others seriously injured during congregational prayers. He stressed that places of worship, intended to be safe havens for reflection, peace, and community, must never become targets.

“The Secretary-General emphasizes that assaults on civilians and religious sites are entirely intolerable,” the statement said. “Those responsible must be identified and brought to justice without delay.”

Guterres extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and offered his thoughts and prayers for the swift recovery of those wounded. He also reaffirmed the United Nations’ unwavering support for Pakistan in its ongoing efforts to confront terrorism and violent extremism.

“He reaffirms the UN’s solidarity with the Government and people of Pakistan as they work to counter terrorism and extremism,” the spokesperson added.

The attack has drawn strong international criticism and renewed calls for collective action to eradicate terrorism and protect religious freedoms. Pakistani authorities have opened an investigation, pledging to track down the perpetrators and ensure accountability.
