Eminent writer, poet Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum remembered on death anniversary

Lahore (Web Desk): The 47th death anniversary of eminent writer, poet and literary figure Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum was observed on Friday.

Born on August 4, 1899, in Amritsar, British India, to Kashmiri parents, Tabassum's intellect and passion for literature would go on to shape not just his era but generations to come.

A master of the Persian language, he earned his degree from Forman Christian College in Lahore, later taking up a position at Government College Lahore, where he devoted his life to teaching and enriching the minds of countless students.

Tabassum's literary prowess stretched across languages, with his translations of Persian and Urdu poetry into Punjabi earning him widespread acclaim. Yet, it was his deep understanding of these languages that made his works stand out, filling them with layers of meaning and beauty that resonated with readers from all walks of life.

Though often associated with the beloved character ‘Tot Batot’, his influence was not limited to literature alone.

He became a well-known voice through radio and television, where his insightful commentary on the arts and literature captivated audiences. This rare combination of intellectual depth and public charisma turned him into a beloved public figure.

Throughout his lifetime, Tabassum was the recipient of numerous accolades, his contributions to the literary arts not going unnoticed.

His awards ranged from the prestigious Pride of Performance to the Tamgha-e-Nishane-Sipas from the Government of Iran in 1966.

In 2023, the President of Pakistan awarded him the Nishan-i-Imtiaz, a reflection of his lasting impact on the world of literature and culture.

He died on this day in 1978.
