Lahore (Web Desk): In light of the ongoing intense heatwave and humidity across Punjab, provincial education authorities are considering extending the summer holidays in schools until August 31, sources revealed on Wednesday. While schools were tentatively scheduled to reopen on August 15, the final decision is now under review.
According to officials within the Punjab School Education Department, the prevailing weather conditions — marked by high temperatures and oppressive humidity — pose a serious health risk to students. Consequently, the government is evaluating whether it is safe to resume in-person classes as originally planned.
Sources indicate that the Meteorological Department’s forecasts and input from health and education experts are being closely reviewed before a final decision is made. The possibility of extending the summer break further remains on the table.
As per the sources, Punjab’s Minister for Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, confirmed that the government is actively monitoring the weather situation and consulting relevant stakeholders.
“We are in the process of deliberating the current climate conditions, and a conclusive announcement regarding school reopening or extension of holidays will be made shortly,” he said.
While Punjab has witnessed intermittent rainfall in recent days, the gaps between showers have led to prolonged periods of extreme heat and humidity. These conditions have complicated the reopening plans, prompting authorities to prioritize student health and safety.
The final decision is expected in the coming days. Until then, parents and educators are advised to stay updated through official government channels.
