Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan is observing Defence and Martyrs Day today to pay tribute to martyrs, their families and veterans of 1965 war with a renewed commitment to defend the motherland against all threats.

On September 6, every year the nation remembers one of its most important historical events. It was on this day in 1965, that the armed forces of Pakistan valiantly defended their motherland against an Indian offensive army during the war.

“On 6th September 1965, it was yet again displayed that a smaller but righteous force overcame a numerically larger enemy with professionalism, determination and faith. Indeed this day and associated heroics and sacrifices continue to inspire our generations. The day exudes the spirit of unity and sacrifice in the defence of our motherland,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release.

“We owe our freedom & peace to unprecedented sacrifices of our martyrs and veterans. Pakistan Armed Forces remain committed to ensuring the defence of motherland against all internal and external threats. Hostile efforts to spoil the hard-earned peace will be met with the full might of the Armed Forces, backed with the support and resolve of the people of Pakistan, Insha’Allah,” the military's media wing said.

On September 6, 1965, the Indian forces crossed the international border to launch an attack on Pakistan, but the country's brave forces foiled the nefarious designs of the enemy.

As the ground forces of the country continued battling the ruthless Indian forces, the Pakistan Navy and Airforce initiated massive operations.

The battle continued till September 22,1965, when both parties consented to a ceasefire that was overseen by the United Nations (UN).

The motherland’s sovereignty and integrity was defended with valour of brave armed forces, backed by the nation’s courage and determination.
