Islamabad (Web Desk): The federal government on Friday announced to extend the tenure of Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmad as the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for an additional three years.
Nazir Ahmad took charge of the NAB on March 4, 2023, succeeding Aftab Sultan, who had stepped down from the position. According to an official statement, the extension will officially begin on March 6, 2026.
This move follows the approval of the NAB (Amendment) Bill, 2026, by President Asif Ali Zardari, which grants the federal government the authority to extend the NAB chairman’s term by three more years.
The president gave his assent just hours after the bill was rapidly passed in both Houses of Parliament, amid protests from opposition members, and a day before Nazir Ahmad’s current tenure was due to end.
Under the previous National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, the NAB chairman served a fixed, non-renewable term of three years.
The amendment to Section 6 now allows the chairperson to complete a three-year term and gives the federal government the discretion to extend it once for an additional three years.
