JCP recommends 9 names for LHC additional judges

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on recommended nine names for appointment as additional judges of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

According to details, the JCP meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, reviewed the nominations for appointments to the LHC.

Among the nominees, who were finalised by the JCP include, are prominent Supreme Court advocate Hassan Nawaz Makhdoom, along with Malik Waqar Haider Awan, Sardar Akbar Ali, Syed Ahsan Raza Kazmi, Malik Javid Iqbal Wains, Muhammad Jawad Zafar, Khalid Ishaq, Malik Muhammad Awais Khalid, and Chaudhry Sultan Mahmood.

It is pertinent to mention that the LHC has a total of 60 available positions for judges, but as of now, only 34 of those positions are filled, leaving 26 unoccupied. The last time new judges were appointed to the court was back on May 7, 2021. The current vacancy rate indicates a significant number of seats still needing to be filled to reach the full capacity of the court.

Meanwhile, Commission clarified that those who did not receive the necessary support this time around could be considered again for future openings. The Chairperson took a moment to express gratitude towards the staff of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), acknowledging their valuable contribution to facilitating the meeting through the online platform.

Before the session began, the members observed a moment of silence to express their condolences for the passing of the spouse of Akhtar Hussain, a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court and a respected member of the JCP.
