Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently conducted a test ride on Pakistan’s first urban electric train, the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART), as part of the project's ongoing trials.
The test journey ran from Ali Town to Muslim Town, where the Chief Minister assessed the train’s performance and examined the onboard features firsthand.
During the visit, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar provided a detailed briefing on the SART initiative. Maryam Nawaz observed the train’s movement amid regular city traffic, gauging its efficiency and integration with the existing road conditions.
Locals living along Raiwind Road and Canal Road gathered to witness the electric train in motion, expressing their excitement at the new development.
SART is a fully electric, eco-friendly transit system that can travel up to 40 kilometers on a single charge.
It comprises three coaches, with the capacity to add a fourth, and can accommodate up to 320 passengers.
The train is equipped with modern amenities, including air-conditioning, to ensure commuter comfort.
Already in operation in countries such as Turkiye, China, and the UAE, this advanced mode of transport is designed to ease traffic congestion and lower environmental pollution in urban areas.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized the positive impact the project will have on Lahore’s environment and urban landscape.
She noted that such innovations signal ongoing progress for Punjab, mentioning that similar electric transit systems are in the pipeline for other major cities like Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
According to her, these efforts reflect a broader commitment to modern, sustainable urban development across the province.
