Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan is observing Defence and Martyrs Day on Sunday, honouring the soldiers and Ghazis who made sacrifices in the defence of the country and reaffirming its determination to safeguard the homeland from any threat.
The annual observance recalls September 6, 1965, when Indian troops crossed the international border under the cover of night and launched an offensive against Pakistan.
The attack brought the nation together as people demonstrated courage, solidarity and determination, while Pakistan’s armed forces confronted the advancing forces.
Since then, the day has been observed to remember the sacrifices of both military personnel and civilians who contributed to the defence of the country.
The day will dawn with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad, while the provincial capitals will mark the occasion with 21-gun salutes.
Mosques across the country will hold special prayers after Fajr, with worshippers seeking peace, prosperity and continued progress for Pakistan.
Prayers will also be offered for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and in support of their right to freedom.
A variety of programmes and activities will be organised to recognise the sacrifices and services rendered by Pakistan’s armed forces in defending the country.
State-owned and private television and radio channels will air special transmissions and programmes highlighting the contributions of those who have defended the motherland.
The observance offers an opportunity for the nation to revisit the courage shown during the 1965 war and remember the strong sense of unity that brought people together during those difficult days.
