Washington (Web Desk): United States (US) President Donald Trump has reignited debate over India's trade policies by publicly criticizing what he described as an imbalanced economic relationship between the two countries.
Speaking about bilateral trade, Trump asserted that India had enjoyed the benefits of access to the American market for years while placing steep duties on US exports.
He claimed that New Delhi had, on certain occasions, imposed tariffs as high as 200 percent on products coming from the US, making it difficult for American businesses to compete fairly.
The US president said that the situation has since shifted, adding that Washington is now earning considerable income through its trade dealings with India.
He further pointed out that the US had previously responded to India's trade approach by introducing heavy tariffs of its own to counter what it viewed as unequal treatment.
Experts monitoring the issue argue that concerns about India extend beyond trade.
They contend that New Delhi has often been accused of withholding information and adopting misleading positions on sensitive matters, including terrorism-related issues.
