Islamabad (Web Desk): A major plan has been prepared to introduce wide-ranging administrative and political reforms in the federal capital, aiming to establish for the first time a powerful and elected local government system in Islamabad.
According to sources, the proposed governance model includes the formation of a 27-member elected assembly for the capital.
This assembly would have the authority to elect its own administrative head, who could hold the position of either a chief minister or a mayor.
Under the proposed framework, day-to-day municipal and public service responsibilities of the federal capital would be transferred to the elected local government.
However, due to the strategic and federal importance of the city, key powers such as security and master planning would remain under federal control, while all other administrative departments are expected to be devolved to the local level.
Experts believe that if approved, the reform would allow residents of the capital to make local decisions through their elected representatives instead of relying on the bureaucracy.
This shift, they say, could help resolve long-standing administrative challenges in the city and improve governance efficiency.
