This step aims to better manage and monitor the valuable camel herds across the country. The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture stated that the move is intended to enhance the productivity and overall performance of the camel sector.
The ministry detailed the project on its social media accounts, sharing an image of the passport, which is green in color. The passport prominently features the Saudi national emblem and a golden camel illustration.
According to official statistics, the camel population in Saudi Arabia is expected to reach nearly 2.2 million by 2024. Camels have historically been an important means of transportation in the Arab world and continue to symbolize prestige and social status for their owners.
Camel breeding has evolved into a profitable industry, with beauty contests held annually across Saudi Arabia. Enthusiasts spend millions of dollars on their camels during these events.
The ministry highlighted that, on some occasions, dishonest individuals attempt to gain unfair advantages in camel competitions through illegal means. The introduction of official registration and passport issuance for camels is a crucial step toward preventing such malpractice.
