Pakistan's confirmed COVID-19 cases soar to 281,493

Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan on Wednesday rose to 281,493.

Overall, 122,373 cases were reported in Sindh, 93,571 in Punjab, 34,324 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 11,780 in Balochistan, 15,122 in Islamabad, 2,218 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 2,105 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached 6,028.

The National Command and Operation Center’s (NCOC) data shows that there has been an improvement in the number of recoveries from COVID-19 in the country with figure now reaching 254,684.

Nearly one-and-a-half months after imposing the lockdown across the country, the government announced to ease the lockdown in phases.

Later, "Smart lockdowns" had been imposed in Covid-19 hotspots in major cities across the country.

As per NCOC, the implementation on the smart lockdown in the country has significantly reduced the number of deaths.

Chairman National Disaster Management Authority Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal has said that due to prudent measures taken by the government the situation of Covid-19 improved and the number of deaths have become lowest.

He said the government has added 3,000 oxygenated beds and sufficient quantity of ventilators were also in godown. NDMA has over 700,000 Personal Protective Equipment in stock. Some 141 laboratories have the facility of Covid testing.

Meanwhile, The Punjab government has ended a lockdown enforced in the province on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha to prevent a spike in cases ahead of schedule.

It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 18 million and death toll tops 680,000.
