New York (Web Desk): Pakistan has welcomed Syrian government’s pledge to tackle activities associated with chemical weapons on its soil.

The statement came from Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Usman Jadoon, during a UN Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East.

Jadoon said that the steps taken by Syria’s new government toward dealing with the issue were noteworthy and should be both acknowledged and encouraged.

He called on the international community to strengthen Syria’s ongoing efforts by extending technical support, specialised expertise and assistance to build the necessary institutional capacity.

The Pakistani envoy said that such support would help the Syrian authorities address the issues that remain unresolved.

Jadoon also reiterated Pakistan’s firm and consistent position in support of Syria’s sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity.
