PM Shehbaz reiterates Pakistan's commitment to charter of UN

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateralism and said the country will continue supporting the United Nations (UN) and its role in addressing global challenges.

He made these remarks during a meeting with Ambassador Olara Otunnu, the candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the UN, who called on him in Islamabad on Friday.

Ambassador Otunnu was accompanied by Ruhakana Rugunda, Special Envoy of the President of Uganda and former Ugandan prime minister.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s continued adherence to the principles and objectives outlined in the UN Charter.

He stressed that international law and existing treaties must be respected and upheld by all countries.

The prime minister also expressed the expectation that the next UN secretary-general would give balanced and interconnected attention to the organisation’s three fundamental areas of work: maintaining peace and security, promoting development, and protecting human rights.

Ambassador Otunnu thanked Pakistan for its longstanding contribution to multilateral diplomacy and for its support across all three major areas of the United Nations’ work.

He also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive leadership and its important contribution to international efforts aimed at promoting peace and security.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch were also present in the meeting.
