Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump has privately indicated to members of his administration that he has no intention of abandoning the ceasefire with Iran unless Iranian actions directly result in the deaths of American service members, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal citing US officials.
The report suggests that Trump remains focused on preventing a broader military confrontation in the Middle East and is prepared to tolerate occasional exchanges of fire rather than risk a return to full-scale warfare.
Officials familiar with the matter said the president could accept limited periods of tension, even if they continue for several weeks or months, provided they do not escalate into a larger conflict.
Although the ceasefire has been in place since early April, relations between Washington and Tehran have grown increasingly strained in recent days.
This week witnessed some of the most serious clashes since the truce began, with Iran launching missiles and drones at US military facilities across the region as well as targeting Kuwait International Airport. The attacks reportedly left one person dead.
At the same time, a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz has added to the crisis, disrupting global trade routes and creating uncertainty in energy markets. Iranian authorities have imposed restrictions on commercial vessels using the strategic waterway, while the United States has tightened measures against Iranian ports through an extensive blockade.
Speaking before a House hearing on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the recent military exchanges as retaliatory actions rather than signs that the two countries had returned to open war. He said US strikes were carried out in response to Iranian attacks and stressed that American forces would not engage if they were not first targeted.
Nevertheless, The Wall Street Journal noted that the recurring attacks have increased pressure on Trump and raised fresh concerns about whether the ceasefire can survive over the long term.
Trump has repeatedly maintained that negotiations are nearing completion on a broader agreement aimed at formally ending the conflict.
According to the report, the proposed arrangement would restore access through the Strait of Hormuz, bring Iran’s nuclear activities to an end, and eliminate its existing stockpile of enriched uranium.
