Wellington (Web Desk): Footballer Tim Payne met Argentine social media influencer Valen Scarcini, popularly known as "El Scarso," for the first time on Wednesday, following a viral video that brought Payne international attention in just a few days.
Scarcini, a well-known creator from Argentina, had last week encouraged his followers to support the relatively lesser-known New Zealand player at the FIFA World Cup. Following this appeal, Payne’s Instagram following skyrocketed from just 4,000 to 4.9 million in a matter of days.
The first meeting took place at New Zealand’s training camp in Florida, where Payne thanked Scarcini and presented him with the national team jersey.
Speaking at the event, Payne said the unexpected popularity has not only benefited him but also brought global attention to New Zealand football. He emphasized that despite the sudden fame, he will remain true to himself and his playing style.
“I am still the same person. My full focus remains on performing my best for my country,” he said. Meanwhile, Scarcini humorously invited Payne to visit Argentina.
