California (Web Desk): Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has reportedly proposed giving the US government a 5% equity stake in the company as part of efforts to improve relations with the Trump administration.
According to a report by the Financial Times, citing two people familiar with the matter, the proposal was made to ease potential tensions with the US government before the company's expected initial public offering (IPO).
The report said OpenAI also suggested that other American AI firms, including Anthropic, consider offering similar equity stakes to the US government as a way to strengthen cooperation between the government and the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry.
The development comes as the US government has increasingly pursued ownership stakes in strategically important companies.
Last year, it acquired nearly a 10% stake in Intel and a 15% stake in MP Materials as part of its broader industrial and technology strategy.
According to the report, OpenAI's proposal is also linked to growing public concerns over the economic impact of artificial intelligence, particularly fears that AI could lead to significant job losses.
The move is being viewed as an effort to maintain positive relations with policymakers and ensure a favorable regulatory environment as AI technology continues to expand.
Neither OpenAI nor the US government has officially commented on the report.
