Coronavirus pandemic affecting global peace and security, warns UN chief

New York (Web Desk): The United Nations (UN) has warned that COVID-19 is affecting peace and security worldwide.

While addressing a virtual meeting of the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that tensions are rising as a result of the severe socioeconomic fallout of the pandemic.

"Protection of health care workers and humanitarian volunteers, helping the virus affectees, is our collective responsibility," he noted.

Antonio Guterres urged the Security Council to play its part in protecting the millions of people in more than 100 conflict zones worldwide.

It is pertinent to mention that the number of Covid-19 cases across the world has crossed 11 million, while the contagion has claimed more than 529,000 lives.

The United States (US) has the highest number of cases and deaths with over 2.8 million cases and more than 132,000 deaths, followed by Brazil with over 1.5 million cases and more than 63,200 deaths.

Over 1.6 million patients have so far recovered from the disease around the world.
