Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday strongly responded to political criticism regarding the provincial government's handling of the recent floods, saying she would not apologize for defending Punjab. She called on political spokespersons who politicized a national tragedy to apologize instead.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of electric buses in Lahore, the Chief Minister issued a clear warning to political opponents—particularly the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), saying that,
“If anyone speaks against Punjab, I will respond forcefully. Next time, think a hundred times before targeting this province.”
Maryam Nawaz said Punjab recently faced one of the worst floods in its history, yet instead of standing in solidarity, some individuals from a “specific province” chose to politicize the disaster.
She accused them of adding insult to injury by turning a humanitarian crisis into a political talking point.
Addressing criticism over the provincial government's decision not to seek international aid, she said:
“When you are committed to spending public money on the public, there is no need to beg. We didn’t ask for foreign help, and that was held against us.”
The Chief Minister alleged that some political elements misled the public and incited street protests, when the need of the hour was national unity and compassion.
During the event, CM Maryam Nawaz also announced the rollout of electric buses in Lahore, positioning the project as part of her broader agenda for sustainable and modern public transport.
She revealed that 70 electric buses will be fully operational in Lahore by December 2025, while electric buses are already functioning in Mianwali, Wazirabad, and Sargodha.
“Lahore is the first city in Pakistan to launch Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, and now electric buses. Providing clean, affordable, and modern transport is our priority,” she said.
Political analysts see Maryam Nawaz’s remarks as a firm response to recent accusations from the PPP, which had criticized the Punjab government’s response during the floods.
Her aggressive tone and confident messaging signal a shift toward a more assertive political strategy.
Observers note that CM Maryam is not only confronting political attacks head-on but is also framing her governance achievements as part of a larger political narrative aimed at strengthening her position ahead of future elections.
