Islamabad (Web Desk): World Wildlife Day is being observed today (Monday) across the globe including Pakistan.
This year theme of the day is "Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet".
The day is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora, to raise awareness of their many benefits.
In his message on the World Wildlife Day Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the government, in collaboration with local communities, conservationists and international partners, will continue efforts to raise awareness about the critical importance of biodiversity.
He said that said it is a reminder of the intrinsic connection between humanity and nature, urging us to reflect on our responsibility to protect the extraordinary wildlife that enriches our lives and ecosystems.
“From the elusive snow leopards of the Himalayas to the endangered Indus River dolphins and the magnificent whale sharks of the Arabian Sea, Pakistan is blessed with mesmerizing biodiversity,”. the premier said, adding that these species are not just part of our natural heritage but they also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining our environment and economy.
PM Shehbaz added that this year’s theme ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet’ underscores the critical need for innovative financial mechanism for the conservation of wildlife species while recognizing their indispensable role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, sustainable economies, and human welfare.
He said investing in a sustainable future for both our people and the planet, our Green Pakistan Programme empowers local communities with economic opportunities that deter poaching and habitat destruction.
The prime minister informed that Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, under the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, has established the Wildlife Rescue Center to rehabilitate injured, orphaned, and abused animals, aiming for their reintroduction into the wild or placement in sanctuaries that cater to their specific needs.
PM Shehbaz also called for joining hands to spread love for Pakistan's beautiful wildlife treasures and fulfill our responsibilities as a dutiful member of the global community.
World Wildlife Day, observed annually on March 3, honours the pivotal agreement known as CITES, which was signed on this date in 1973.
The purpose of CITES is to regulate the global trade of endangered animals and plants, ensuring their protection and survival.
The United Nations (UN) established this day to emphasize the urgent need for conservation efforts and to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding the planet’s wildlife.
By drawing attention to the consequences of uncontrolled trade and exploitation, World Wildlife Day encourages individuals and governments to take collective action in preserving biodiversity.
Each year, the day highlights a specific conservation issue, reminding us of the vital role wildlife plays in maintaining ecological balance.
