PM Shehbaz leaves for Iran to attend slain supreme leader Ali Khamenei's funeral

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for Tehran on Friday for an official two-country visit to Iran and Turkiye.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO),  the premier will participate in the funeral ceremony of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28.

PM Shehbaz is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.

During the visit, PM Shehbaz will also offer condolences to the Iranian leadership and the bereaved families on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, while reaffirming Islamabad's solidarity with the people of Iran during their time of grief.

Earlier, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, along with a high-level delegation, arrived in Tehran to attend the funeral prayers and burial, state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported. 

The delegation was received by Iranian officials upon its arrival in the Iranian capital.

After completing his engagements in Tehran, the prime minister will head to Istanbul at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During their meeting, the two leaders are expected to review all major aspects of Pakistan-Turkiye ties, with particular attention on boosting trade, expanding investment opportunities and deepening economic cooperation between the two friendly nations.

The talks will also include an exchange of views on regional peace, security and other matters of shared interest.

While in Istanbul, PM Shehbaz is also scheduled to address a business conference organised by Pakistan to promote the country's economic and investment prospects.

The event will showcase opportunities in key sectors such as Special Economic Zones (SEZs), energy, trade, information technology and the privatisation programme, with the objective of attracting greater foreign investment.
