Tehran (Web Desk): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Friday during his visit to the Iranian capital to attend the funeral ceremonies of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The meeting took place as the COAS joined Pakistan’s high-level delegation participating in the final funeral rites of Ayatollah Khamenei, who was martyred in US-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026.
During the talks, Field Marshal Asim Munir paid heartfelt tribute to the late Iranian leader, praising his lifelong dedication to Iran and acknowledging his leadership and contributions to the country.
He conveyed deep respect for Ayatollah Khamenei’s legacy and recognised the significant role he played in shaping Iran’s political and religious landscape.
The interaction between the Pakistani army chief and the Iranian foreign minister reflected the close ties between the two neighbouring countries at a time of national mourning in Iran. The two sides also exchanged views in an atmosphere of mutual respect during the high-level engagement.
Field Marshal Asim Munir is in Tehran as part of the Pakistani delegation led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The delegation is attending the state funeral and final burial ceremonies of Ayatollah Khamenei, with senior Pakistani civilian and military leaders joining Iranian officials and foreign dignitaries in paying their final respects to the late Supreme Leader.
The visit underscores Pakistan’s expression of solidarity with Iran following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei and highlights the longstanding diplomatic and strategic relationship between the two neighbouring nations.
