Diamer (Staff Report): At least 12 schools of girls were attacked and set ablaze by unidentified attackers in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district late on Thursday night.
According to reports, Royini Girls School, Takya Girls School, two schools in Chilas’ Hodur and Thor neighbourhoods, three girls schools in the Darel division, Giyal village and Khanbanri were also set ablaze while a two schools were torched in Jangloot, Gali Bala and Gali Payen.
Diamer Division Commissioner Abdul Waheed Shah told the media that suspects had caused damage to schools that were under construction. He said reports of explosions were unfounded and damage to the buildings was being surveyed.
No one has claimed responsibility for the incidents as yet.
Meanwhile, G-B Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman took notice of the attacks and summoned a report.
Inspector General Police of Gilgit-Baltistan Sanaullah Abbasi and Force Commander of Northern Areas, Major General Saqib Mehmood arrived in Chilas after the incident.
The Diamer Youth Movement staged a protest in Chilas, the district headquarters, against the targeting of education institutions in the district.
