Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan sign multiple accords to strengthen cooperation in diverse sectors

Bishkek (Web Desk): Pakistan and the Kyrgyz Republic on Wednesday signed multiple accords to enhance bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors including trade, security, education, environment, and technology.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov attended the signing ceremony, during which officials from the two countries formally exchanged the documents that had already been signed.

The two leaders also endorsed a joint statement outlining the key discussions and objectives of PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Kyrgyzstan.

The prime minister is in Bishkek on a three-day trip to participate in the meeting of the Council of Heads of State (CHS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Among the agreements was a diplomatic cooperation programme covering 2026 and 2027, to be implemented by the foreign ministries of Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation in research and strategic studies.

The two countries also concluded arrangements concerning transit trade, with the aim of making commercial transportation between them easier.

Separate agreements were reached to strengthen collaboration in science and technology, while a treaty covering extradition was also signed.

In addition, the two governments prepared a draft agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, setting out a framework for cooperation in legal and criminal cases.

The interior ministries of Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed another MoU aimed at jointly tackling the illegal trade and trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals, along with other related matters.

Cooperation in the healthcare sector was also strengthened through an MoU between Kyrgyzstan’s health ministry and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, focusing particularly on medical education.

Another agreement between the education ministries of the two countries seeks to broaden collaboration in the field of education.

Environmental cooperation was addressed through an MoU signed by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. The agreement is intended to enhance joint efforts on environmental protection and climate change.

The National Defence University of Pakistan and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic also agreed to work together on academic research and other cooperative activities.

Meanwhile, an MoU between Kyrgyzstan’s National Agency for Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies, operating under the Kyrgyz President, and Pakistan’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority will promote collaboration in the virtual assets sector.

Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan further agreed to establish a sister-city relationship between Lahore and Osh, creating a framework for closer cooperation and exchanges between the two cities.

In the postal and e-commerce sector, OJSC Kyrgyz Post and Pakistan Post signed a bilateral agreement to develop mutually beneficial cooperation.

Another agreement between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry was signed to encourage stronger commercial and business relations between the two countries.
