Powerful explosion in northern Mexico supermarket kills 23, injures 11

Hermosillo (Web Desk): A massive explosion tore through a supermarket in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo on Saturday, killing at least 23 people and leaving 11 others injured, local officials reported.

Authorities confirmed that several children were among the victims of the blast, which struck a “Waldo’s” store in the city’s downtown area. Rescue teams and firefighters quickly responded, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video message that the government is offering full medical and psychological assistance to the victims and their families. He announced that a thorough and transparent investigation has been launched to uncover the cause of the explosion and determine responsibility.

Officials have ruled out terrorism or intentional violence at this stage, though the precise cause of the blast is still being investigated.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sorrow over the incident on the social media platform X, saying she was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and injured.
