Riyadh/London (Web Desk): Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that early this morning an attempt was made to target the Ras Tanura refinery, one of the world’s largest oil refineries, using drones. The Saudi air defense system successfully intercepted the attack in a timely operation, preventing any significant damage.
According to Saudi officials, two armed drones heading toward the refinery were destroyed mid-air. During the incident, debris from one of the drones fell within the refinery premises, igniting a small fire. Authorities reported no casualties, and the fire was swiftly brought under control.
British news agency Reuters reported that following the attack, Aramco temporarily shut down its facilities as a precautionary measure, producing visible plumes of smoke in the sky. Ras Tanura is a key hub for Saudi Aramco and plays a critical role in global oil supply, with the capacity to produce millions of barrels of crude oil daily.
The Saudi Ministry of Defense strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on global energy security.
Preliminary reports suggest the assault may have originated from Iran, although investigative teams are examining evidence at the site to determine the actual source of the attack.
