Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump is reported to have had a heated telephone exchange on Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which he strongly objected to Israel’s expanded military actions in Lebanon and urged restraint, according to three sources quoted by Axios.
The report says Trump was particularly frustrated by Israel’s decision to widen its military campaign, fearing it could disrupt ongoing US diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching an understanding with Iran and derail sensitive negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
US officials cited by Axios added that Trump became visibly angered during the call and sharply criticised Netanyahu’s approach, at one point describing Netanyahu as “crazy” and accusing him of failing to show appreciation for long-standing American backing.
Another US official said Trump warned that any move to proceed with strikes on Beirut could further damage Israel’s global standing and lead to increased international isolation.
One of the sources also claimed that Trump reminded Netanyahu of his past political support, telling him:
“You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me,” a remark referencing his previous backing during Netanyahu’s corruption trial and underscoring his anger over Israel’s planned escalation in Lebanon.
