Karachi (Staff Report): Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif on Friday said that the courts have used doctrine of necessity to validate martial laws in the country.

Speaking in a seminar on ‘The Future of Democracy in Pakistan’, Nawaz said that the doctrine of necessity adversely affected democracy in the country, adding that nexus of dictators and court hampered democracy from prospering in Pakistan. He said that democracy in Pakistan came under attack when it starts to strengthen.

“Every time we looked for support from judiciary, it supported dictatorship instead, leaving us weak,” he maintained.

He said not a single elected prime minister completed tenure in Pakistan, adding that strict actions needed to put the country on track.

He questioned why the court has not given its decision in the treason case against former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

Nawaz reached Karachi on Thursday on the two-day visit.
