Lahore (Web Desk): The Punjab Assembly Speaker on Saturday announced that new chief minister (CM) will be elected on April 3 (Sunday).
The session had been called to elect a new chief minister (CM) after resignation of Usman Buzdar.
Punjab Assembly Speaker and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) candidate for the vacant slot while Hamza Shehbaz is Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) candidate for the post.
The speaker later adjourned the day's proceedings which were marred by sloganeering from both sides of the aisle.
The time for submission of nomination papers was until 5pm today and scrutiny of the papers had been done by 6pm, said Secretary of the Punjab Assembly Muhammad Khan Bhatti.
In the 371-member provincial assembly, the PTI has 183 lawmakers, PML-Q 10, PML-N 165, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) 7, Independent member 5, and one belongs Pakistan Rah-e-Haq Party (PRHP).
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) dissident Jahangir Khan Tareen group has formally announced to support the joint Opposition’s candidate, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz for Punjab’s chief minister slot.
Addressing a joint press conference alongside Hamza Shehbaz, Tareen group’s senior leader Malik Nauman Langriyal made the official announcement.
He said that all the decisions have been taken by estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen and all members of his group agree with the decision.
